Pain and Performance – There are always options!

When you are in pain you just don’t enjoy your life as much. You often can’t do the sports and activities you love, and your life can feel like a real chore. Whether it’s from a physical injury, anxiety or a feeling of being overwhelmed, pain can be a miserable experience. Often, the first port of call is advice from your family and friends as they are bound to have experienced their own pain at some point.

But what happens when their advice, tips and tricks don’t work? How about the Internet? There is such a wealth of information available in many forms, so surely there will be something to help you?

After all, there is no shortage of experts and gurus that swear by this fix or that solution.

The thing is, you are unique: what works for one person may just not work for you at all.

Frustrated, you might go to your doctor, a physio, chiropractor or other therapist. They’ve dealt with dozens, if not hundreds, of people in your position, so they’ll have the answer, right? But it’s estimated that 25% of pain cannot be diagnosed and attributed to a physical injury. For many practitioners, this presents a problem – what can they do now?

So, what does happen next?

But does this really help the situation? Sure, sometimes it can. But it can also lead to burnout and an even worse situation. And, just training or working harder or longer makes no difference at all because your underlying system just isn’t ready for it.

The smart approach is to ask the question: “Why is my performance suffering?”.

Underneath everything you are and everything you do, think and feel as a human being is your nervous system. It is always in full control of everything about you.
